Deter Break-ins While Adding Value to Your Home!

If you are away from home for the holidays or because you’re preparing for a move, this is the time when thieves will target your home for a break-in. Criminals are aware that many homeowners travel during the holidays, however there are ways for you to deter a thief throughout the winter when you are away or moving. As an added bonus, many of these suggestions will make your home more attractive to potential homebuyers and might even add value to the price of your home!

Tell Your Neighbors That You Aren’t Home

If you have neighbors living nearby, then tell them that you won’t be home so that they can watch to see if anything unusual happens. They might keep on the lookout for strange vehicles or people who are hanging around your home.

Trim Trees and Shrubbery

Thieves look for easy ways to break into a home without being seen, and if your home is surrounded with trees and shrubs, then they can hide. In only a few seconds, a burglar can cut a window screen and the glass in order to steal your possessions without being seen. The upside to keeping your yard neat if you’re looking to sell your home is that it will make it more attractive to buyers!

Install an Automated Security Alarm System

When you plan to be away from home in the winter, it is a good idea to install an automated security alarm system. With this device, an alarm makes a loud noise that alerts neighbors, and it will also notify the local police. You can also have a security alarm system connected to your cell phone to alert you about a break-in immediately. Not only do they deter thieves, home alarm systems can add value to your home and bring down your home insurance rates!

Increase the Lighting Around Your Home

To deter thieves, you need additional exterior lighting. You can choose to install electric lights near windows and doorways, or you can install solar lights. In addition, you might want to have timers on the lamps and light fixtures inside your home to make it appear as though you are at home. This adds value to your home and also makes your home look nicer in dark winter months, a bonus if you’re looking to sell your home before spring.

Add More Locks to Your Home

If your home has flimsy locks on the doors and windows, then it is easy for a burglar to break in. Update the locks on windows and doors with new devices, including dead bolts. Make sure to add special locks to a home’s patio glass doors and the garage door.
